martyred saints & a living genius

The feast of St. Valentine was first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I. The Ale of
Chocolate was first established by Christopher Elbow in 2011.  These two great events
in history have converged to tease money out of the wallets of scenesters, frustrate
middle-aged businessmen and work soccer moms into a lather. We will be tapping our
Boulevard Chocolate Ale kegs on Valentine’s Day.  If you’d like to enjoy the delicious
Elbow/Boulevard collaboration, your best plan is to make an early reservation for Tuesday
February 14th.  That’s right, you can combine the highly commercial Hallmark holiday
with the over-hyped & under-produced Boulevard Chocolate Ale. Be the last of your
friends to savor what one man described as “one of the 2 or 3 most chocolatey ales”
he’s ever tasted. Visit opentable.com or call 816.283.3234 for a reservation.

frühschoppen

Somehow any meal occurring on Sunday in Kansas City is considered “brunch.”
Furthermore, many people seem to think that “brunch” is synonymous with “buffet.”
In an effort to muddy the waters further we have introduced früschoppen to the scene.
Früschoppen is the traditional Sunday meal in Austria.  The star of früschoppen is stelze
or schweinshaxe as it is known in Germany. Stelze is a brined and slow-roasted 3 lb. pork
shank that is so tender that it’s held together only by thin strips of crispy skin. This
succulent dish pairs perfectly with a 1/2 liter of Stiegl Pils and comes with your choice of
two side dishes such as rosti potatoes, sauerkraut or spätzle.  Another früschoppen staple
is kaiserschmarrn.  Kaiserschmarrn consists of a light, airy, sweet egg batter that is cooked
until it carmelizes, shredded, topped with powdered sugar and sided with a roasted prune
sauce called zwetschgetröster.  Don’t let all of the crazy new words scare you.  If you like
pork (and who doesn’t?) there is no way you won’t love the stelze.  If you like french toast
and pancakes (and who doesn’t?) there is no way you won’t love the kaiserschmarrn.
And, if you’re one of those weirdos who answered “I don’t” to either of the previous
parenthetical queries, there are many other options.

meinl coffee

Coffee is central to Viennese culture.  Europe's cafe culture and love of coffee originated
in Vienna.  The Austrian mastery of coffee comes from their complicated history with
Turkey.  Twice invaded by the Turks and with an expansive empire of their own, Austrians
gained the knowledge and connections needed to become premier roasters and brewers of
coffee.  Our coffee comes from world reknown roaster Julius Meinl.  Meinl coffee, roasted
in Vienna, is only available in Chicago and in our restaurant in Kansas City. Come in and
have a cup, or visit our new retail display in the restaurant to bring some home with you!
